How To Shop Retro

BLOG POST

Monday, February 15

by Shaynna

Creating an interior with second hand furniture and discount purchases is something you should be proud of. There are two bonuses to shopping this way: 1. Saving money & 2. Saving the environment. By using second hand pieces it reduces landfill, manufacturing costs and your carbon footprint.

One of the most popular styles these days is ‘Retro’ which is basically a combination of 60’s-70’s & 80’s interiors or being specific to the one decade.

Put the word Retro in a Google or e-bay search and lists pop-up every-where. Unfortunately if you want a bargain the style is so popular at the moment that what you could have picked up for $20 one day you now find yourself in a bidding war as its soars to $200, $300 or even some original pieces and get to $1,500.

Christmas Decorating

BLOG POST

Friday, November 27

by Shaynna

Well I’m sure if you haven’t already pulled out the old Christmas tree or popped down to the tree farm, it won’t be far away. December 1st is our traditional time to put the decorations in our home and covering the front house ‘Griswald’ Style in competition with the rest of the street. One year it is overkill and the next year we tone it down (still remembering the pain of how long it took to dismantle) This year we are in ‘pain mode’ and taking the decorations easy. We all look for different ways to decorate at Christmas time and there are many ways you can bring your home to life.

Children’s Rooms

BLOG POST

Children’s rooms are not only an area to sleep but also a great space for kids to express themselves and a place to play (sometimes to hide away from little brothers or sisters). It is good to let a child have a say in what goes in their room but from an adult perspective keep in mind the practicalities of their bedroom

Safety
- Modern blinds have cords that are potentially dangerous so make sure you have a chain mechanism with its guide at a height a toddler or small child cant reach. Many dangerous accidents have happened that could have been avoided but simple attention to safety.

When Australia was first settled, our architecture was generated from English designers who were commissioned by wealthy landowners to build them homes and governments commissioned many of our iconic landmarks to overseas architects. The government being thrifty enough to use convict architects such as Henry Laing who designed and Francis Greenway (who later became a Sir and is on our $10 note) designed numerous public buildings in NSW. And American Architect, Walter Burley Griffin designed virtually all of Canberra (including the landscaping and landscaping architecture).

Designing My Bathroom

BLOG POST

Friday, September 25

by Shaynna

Alongside the kitchen, your bathroom will be a costly process when you decide to do a renovation. When I first started designing it was about bath, shower, basin and toilet ( bidets were there but more a novelty than a necessity). You had a basic tile on the floor and wall and decisions were more about whether you went for plain white china or the exciting dove grey or Salmon (glad those trends have gone!). But now the choices and the challenges are even greater.

Our bathroom is a lifestyle and the square meterage allocated to the area is now double, even triple, if you count most homes have an en-suite ( 1 or 2 bedrooms), main bathroom and powder room. An ensuite to your Master bedroom is almost a necessity when selling your home in today’s market.

Decorating To Trends

BLOG POST

Friday, August 28

The expression of ‘that is so 80’s’ conjures images of salmon bathrooms with matching toilets, baths and basins just as much as 70’s Mission Brown and frightening wallpaper designs make you cringe with horror. I would like to think we are at a great stage of design where individuality is key and this maybe the cultural defining essence of this decade, but of course, only time will tell. Creating your own style is pretty hard with influences are constantly telling you what the new trend is. So where can you create your individuality in modern home with out the fear of dating your home?

There are many areas to our kitchen that need our attention to detail and not just what are the trend colours and surfaces of the moment.

A kitchen is a large investment in our home and it deserves your time and energy to let it deliver the best possible outcome for your needs.

The best way to look at it is to do a checklist – This checklist will highlight questions you need to pay attention to (and it might trigger more for you)

Give yourself time to work in your kitchen and see what type of kitchen you need. This will be your building block for your kitchen and next time we will go through the details of what we need to address.

I have had many enquiries about what it is like to be an Interior Designer and how can you make it a career and I can honestly say it is a rewarding career that I highly recommend. So I thought I would tackle this by outlining the types of jobs in the industry of interiors and different ways to be involved. There are many levels of entry into the world on interiors and it is important to match your passion with your expectations.

But a common question is “What is the difference between an Interior Designer and Interior Decorator?”
These explanations taken from the Design Institute of Australia website are a great breakdown of what is involved.
